In 1964, a Swedish born Californian banker by the name of Rudolph A. Peterson (1904-2003) purchased Hacienda La Esmeralda, which at the time comprised several hundred hectares in the area of Palmira. He had the intention of retiring there, but at the time he was the president of the Bank of America.

During the first years after the purchase, Rudolph would visit the Hacienda every couple of months, however, in 1970 he became the director of Development for the United Nations, and his obligations abroad grew, leaving him less time to visit the farm. Many years earlier he had met and married Patricia Price. They had two children: Linnea and Price.

In 1996 the Petersons came together to purchase another farm in the area, Esmeralda Jaramillo. It was on a section of this farm that they discovered the famous Esmeralda Special, Geisha trees.

We first purchased coffee from Hacienda La Esmeralda in 2006. That was the first year the farm won the SCAP Best of Panama competition. Following the competition, they set a world record for the price paid for coffee at auction. That price has been shattered several times as they have garnered the reputation as one of the elite coffees in the world.

After the excitment surrounding the 2011 Hacienda La Esmeralda Auction finished, and all of the bids were in, we were proud to announce that we received one of the Montaña lots. This is the first year that Hacienda La Esmeralda made the Montaña lots available, and they represent the highest grown micro-lots on the farm. Montaña received the highest price at the 2011 Esmeralda Auction.

Our Signature Gift Box comes with a Wonders of Geisha T-Shirt and one of our new Hardwood Wood-Burned Boxes. Please Indicate your T-Shirt size in the notes section.
