Situated in the central Nyeri District of Kenya, the Gachatha Factory sits in the fertile foothills of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare Range. This region is commonly referred to as the home of Kenyan coffee with a history of producing high-quality coffee.
With its deep and fertile soil rich in organic matter and ideal climate, this area is perfect for growing the highly prized SL-28 and SL-34 coffee tree varietals. During the harvesting months, farmers pick the ripest cherries and bring them to the factory daily for processing.
The Gachatha Factory uses the traditional washed process. A three step disc pulper removes the cherry skin and mucilage from the parchment layer of the coffee bean before it is soaked overnight in clean water. This short fermentation helps to remove the rest of the mucilage before the coffee is rinsed and spread out on the tables to sun dry for 7-15 days. The dried green coffee is then sorted by quality, with AA being the highest.
In partnership with Dormans and Coffee Management Services, the Gachatha Factory has implemented farmer training and agricultural support with long-term goals in mind of producing the highest quality coffees and garnering higher prices for the smallholder coffee farmers.
This lightly roasted coffee features a floral lavender aroma, syrupy body, and vibrant acidity. When brewed it has notes of crème brûlée and prunes with a sweetness of blackberry jam and a deep port wine and cola finish.
