This creamy light roast coffee introduces itself with sweet aromas of chocolate-covered almond and red apple. Notes of nougat, cocoa powder, and baked pineapple accompany rose hip acidity in the cup. Toasted almond and thyme notes emerge in the finish.

Previously featured as the Holiday Bean for the 2023 holiday season, El Matazano is now available in our standard retail packaging!

El Matazano is a beautiful example of the nutty, creamy Pacamara variety and one of the first lots we ever featured from Finca Los Planes. Husband and wife producers Sergio and Isabel Ticas grow this coffee at the highest elevation on their farm, over 5,700 feet. Cooler nights at high elevation slow coffee cherry maturation, creating a deeper sweetness in the processed bean.

Sergio Ticas and his wife, Isabel, became our first Direct Trade partners more than 15 years ago. On our first visit it was clear that their commitment to quality and sustainable practices is top priority. They have engaged in various sustainability initiatives over the last few years, like installing a new water recovery system to protect the water supply and purify water used during coffee processing before releasing it back into the ecosystem.

We are proud to have partnered with Finca Los Planes on many projects to help their community and improve the farm since 2007. Providing the surrounding community—many of whom are coffee pickers at Los Planes—with medicines for the clinic and uniforms for the football team have created a solid foundation of trust between the farm and the community. Everyone has a vested interest in a successful harvest each year.
